What is Accelerated Reader?
Accelerated Reader is a computer-based learning information system. It provides teachers with a simple tool to manage the reading practice of each student in a classroom. Accelerated Reader is appropriate for use with students from Years 1-12, regardless of their reading ability.Through ongoing reading practice quizzes, Accelerated Reader collects data about each student’s reading behaviour, including what the student is reading and how often. Teachers can use this data to assess each student’s reading ability, helping to tailor their instruction and motivate each student to read more.
How does it work?
In the simplest terms, Accelerated Reader works through a couple of simple procedures. Firstly, the student selects a book within their reading range and then takes a computer-based quiz on the book they have read. After completing the quiz, the student receives immediate feedback about their success. Using this feedback in the form of a report, teachers can provide further positive feedback to each student, based on their quiz results.Teachers can also take this opportunity to encourage the student to select their next book to read, using the student’s own enthusiasm to maintain momentum in the reading program.
